In seminary I had a professor, Dr. Fink (yes, that's his real name) who used to make us repeat with him this phrase: "All means all, and that's all all means." We'd say it probably once or twice a week, whenver we came across the word "all" in scripture or in homework.
It was interesting how the human mind doesn't like to think in absolutes-we are always looking for a way around it. How else would attorney's have jobs? For example: It's illegal to murder. But all these technicalities and exceptions means that it can't always be illegal to murder.
When scripture says in Romans that "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God," there isn't any exceptions. Not one. And then we hit forgiveness....
You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin. Psalm 85:2
Is there any sin he can't forgive or cover? Colossians 2:13-And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses. ALL TRESPASSES.
It's funny how we try to get around that. Some think that their sins aren't so bad; that they are essentially a 'good person'. Trying to get around 'all' again. Some Christians still struggle with whether or not Jesus could really forgive them of that secret sin that they hold on to. That one moment in the past that they can't forget. They rationalize that His blood can forgive all their other sins, but not that one.
All means all, and that's all that all means. All in the original Greek was the word "holos" which means "all, completely, wholly." There's no other way around it. If the Son has set you free, you are free indeed. Free of ALL your sins. So accept it and be free.
All means "all"-part one.
